Most people think saving energy in a deck oven is all about thicker insulation or finding a lower wattage. But honestly? The real magic is in the response time. We use halogen heating bulbs because they give us temperature control down to the second. It basically kills that annoying lag between when the thermostat says “heat up” and when the heat actually hits the deck. The trick with shortwave radiation Traditional tubular heaters are a bit slow. They have to heat up the air around them first, which takes time. Halogen bulbs are different. They blast shortwave infrared radiation that hits the product surface directly. We use a tungsten filament inside a quartz envelope filled with halogen. It keeps the filament from burning out even when it’s running hot. The result? The bulb hits full power almost the instant you flip the switch. Stopping the energy leak Here’s the problem with slow heaters: they have “thermal overshoot.” They take so long to warm up and cool down that the oven stays too hot for way longer than it needs to. You’re essentially paying for kilowatts of power that aren’t doing anything useful. Because halogen bulbs snap on and off in seconds, we can keep the power cycles incredibly tight. You only pull electricity the moment the sensor feels a dip. No idling. No wasted heat soaking into the walls of the oven. The “catch” (and how to handle it) Now, you can’t just toss these into any old oven and call it a day. Since the heat is so concentrated, the reflectors have to be aligned perfectly. If they’re off by a hair, you’ll get hotspots on your deck, and nobody wants that. Also, these bulbs are picky about power. If your voltage spikes, the lamps won’t last. To make this work, we pair them with a fast-acting Solid State Relay (SSR). It handles the rapid-fire switching without wearing out like a mechanical part would. If you try to run this setup with a slow mechanical contactor, you’re throwing away the speed advantage. Plus, you’ll probably just end up breaking the equipment.
